Visioneering
Community Groups Share Their Thoughts on Rancho Cucamonga Through Visioneering
To assist with the updating of the Rancho Cucamonga General Plan, dozens of trained volunteers have completed a grassroots polling process called Visioneering. The Visioneers are trained to solicit and document public input for the General Plan update. The purpose of Visioneering is to conduct more extensive outreach to a range of community groups, neighborhood groups, and stakeholders.
Through a series of five basic questions (distributed on Idea Cards), the City had begun to learn about issues and concerns felt by citizens and businesses related to the planning process and Rancho Cucamonga’s future.

The Visioneer process was designed to gather input from the broader community with representation of the cultural and geographic diversity of Rancho Cucamonga. Each Visioneer was encouraged to choose from the following methods to solicit community input:
Activity 1: Facilitate a discussion with a group the Visioneer already meets with regularly
Activity 2: Schedule a special meeting with a group you know and facilitate a discussion
Activity 3: Distribute the Idea Cards to a group or groups
The Visioneering training sessions reviewed basic meeting management and facilitation, including group dynamics, communication, conflict resolution, leadership style, and motivational techniques.
Each Visioneers has held workshops as a way of “visioneering” Rancho Cucamonga, a participatory process in which extensive public input and local knowledge is gathered regarding current and possible future issues facing the community. The recorded knowledge obtained during “visioneering” is then organized in an easily readable manner and is used to contribute to, and guide, the planning and policy making process for the City of Rancho Cucamonga.
Throughout the process, the participants shared their thoughts on what made Rancho Cucamonga unique, on major issues presently facing Rancho Cucamonga, and on the outlook of Rancho Cucamonga’s future. On discussing what made Rancho Cucamonga unique, overwhelming response from participants showed that the abundance and variety of shopping and entertainment venues was a feature that residents felt made Rancho Cucamonga a unique destination in the Inland Empire. Frequently cited was the presence of equestrian uses such as horse trails and large lots for horse stables in northern parts of the city. The participants also found its foothill location and the natural geography surrounding Rancho Cucamonga as another major attribute that makes Rancho Cucamonga unique.
The participants discussed their thoughts on what issues and concerns presently face Rancho Cucamonga. According to the participants in the workshop, chief among their current concerns for Rancho Cucamonga is the traffic. People were concerned about the negative effects of spending too much time on roads and the congestion of cars on both the surface streets and on the freeway. Amongst other issues, the participants expressed their concerns about unabated growth in Rancho Cucamonga- participants frequently commented that growth was occurring to fast for the city. Attendees of the workshop also identified the increase in crime as a major concern for those presently living in Rancho Cucamonga.
The future of Rancho Cucamonga was also discussed amongst the participants. It was found that when discussing the future, attendees were most pessimistic about the same exact things that are major concerns to them today. They cited overcrowding, traffic, and safety, respectively, as the top three things that they feel will be a problem in the future for Rancho Cucamonga.
However, the participants stated that there are many positive things that leave them optimistic about Rancho Cucamonga’s future. Cited was the City’s ability to thoughtfully plan and design growth in a way that would continue to enrich Rancho’s quality of life. Participants were also optimistic that in the future, Rancho Cucamonga will be a place that will offer great economic opportunities and an excellent school system to future residents. The participants were also optimistic that leadership and smart planning by City officials and staff will steward Rancho Cucamonga on the right path towards the future.
